With multiple professional sports teams, iconic stadiums, and enough world-class sports bars to keep one busy for a lifetime, New York City is an ultimate destination for a sports-themed holiday or weekend away with the guys. And while no sports getaway to New York City would be complete without checking out one of the City’s (and area’s) professional sports teams, there are many other sports activities worth checking out as well. If a New York City helicopter tour over Yankee stadium, a trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and relaxing with buddies while watching the game at a sports bar sound like fun, read on for our list of the ultimate New York City experience for sports fans.
1. Check out at least one professional team live. During baseball season, you’ll have to declare your allegiance to New York’s rivals: the Mets and the Yankees. Consider yourself lucky if you are in town to see these two hometown favorites go head-to-head. However, outside of hardball season, New York doesn’t make it any easier: beyond the Yankees vs. the Mets, New York also has the Nicks vs. the Nets, the Giants vs. the Jets, and the Rangers vs. the Islanders, to name a few notable rivalries!
2. Take a New York City Helicopter Tour – Visit Yankee Stadium from the ground, and then once you’re done with that, take a New York City helicopter tour to enjoy views of this iconic New York institution from the air. Views of Yankee Stadium can be enjoyed during the Central Park Tour or the Grand Helicopter Tour.
3. Check out more games at a sports bar. Mullholland’s in Brooklyn counts as a favourite among many native New Yorkers. Open on weekends from noon, they have 22 beers on tap, awesome sports grub (including the self-proclaimed best wings in Brooklyn) and, most importantly, a constant stream of sports on TV.
4. Become cultured at a sports museum. Rent a car and head upstate to Cooperstown, New York, the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. With thousands of pieces of baseball history and artefacts on site, the museum does an exceptional job at capturing the history of the game, and America’s love for it.
